India top court grants more time for telco licence cancellation

April 24th, 2012 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

India’s Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the government to conduct an auction of 2G radio spectrum by Aug. 31, giving more time to companies whose licences are set to be revoked after the court’s ruling in February.

The Supreme Court said the companies whose licences are to be cancelled can operate until Sept. 7.

The court had earlier ordered 122 permits granted to eight operators in a scandal-tainted 2008 sale be revoked in early June and asked the government to redistribute radio airwaves through an open bidding process.

Activist renews anti-graft fast to pressure India

August 16th, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

A veteran social activist renews a fast to the death in New Delhi on Tuesday to force tougher laws against corruption, to the dismay of India’s embattled prime minister and his ruling party as they grapple with scandals and a slowing economy.

Decked out in a plain white shirt, white cap and spectacles in the style of Mahatma Gandhi, the septuagenarian Anna Hazare became the unlikely thorn in the side of the Congress party-led coalition when he went on an indefinite hunger strike in April.

Tapping into a groundswell of discontent over corruption scandals in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government, Hazare lobbied for a parliamentary bill creating a special ombudsman to bring crooked politicians, bureaucrats and judges to book.

Hazare called off his fast after the government promised to introduce the bill into parliament. The legislation was presented in early August, but activists slammed the draft version as toothless, prompting Hazare to renew his campaign.

A string of corruption scandals have shaken India in the past few months, smothering Singh’s reform agenda, denting investor confidence and distracting parliament at a time when the economy is hit by inflation and higher interest rates.

Delhi welcomes athletes to fortified capital

September 30th, 2010 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – As the countdown to the Commonwealth Games moved into its final three days, athletes continued to flood into a heavily guarded Indian capital as the host of problems surrounding the event showed signs of easing.

More than 4,000 athletes have arrived in Delhi to find a city wrapped in a security blanket and a Games needing a last-minute government intervention to rescue the multi-sports gathering and prevent a huge embarrassment for India.

A visit to the venue by International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge on Friday will provide a much-needed boost for organizers reeling from the logistical nightmare of trying to arrange India’s answer to the Beijing Olympics.

Shoddy construction and filthy toilets at the Games Village delayed the arrivals of several teams but the last-ditch efforts to improve the situation appears to be paying off.

Political parties

India has a multi-party system with a predominance of small regional parties. National parties are those that are recognized in four or more states. They are accorded this status by the Election Commission of India, which periodically reviews the election results in various states. This recognition helps the political parties to claim unique ownership of certain identities, such as the party symbol, until the next review of their status. Below are national parties as per October 2004.

The Constitution of India stipulates that India be a federal polity with a central government in New Delhi, and state governments for the various states and Union territories. Consequently, political parties in India are classified as national and state (regional) parties based on their realms of influence.

Politics of India take place in a framework of a federal parliamentary multi-party representative democratic republic modeled after the British Westminster System. The Prime Minister of India is the head of government, while the President of India is the formal head of state and holds substantial reserve powers, placing him or her in approximately the same position as the British monarch. Executive power is exercised by the government. Federal legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of the Parliament of India. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
